A Thai-flagged cargo ship was heavily affected in a new series of attacks on commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz, a key maritime gateway for global oil transport. The incident occurred while the ship was sailing about 11 nautical miles north of Oman, where it was hit by projectiles that caused a fire on board and forced
a rapid rescue operation.According to the Thai navy, all 23 crew members of the ship managed to be evacuated alive after the attack. Emergency teams came to the scene to control the fire and assist the crew, while maritime authorities began to investigate the incident
.Iran assured that the ship had ignored previous warnings before entering the area, and so it claimed to have acted accordingly. However, the attack has generated international concern due to the risk it poses to commercial navigation on one of the most important energy routes on the planet
.The Strait of Hormuz connects the Persian Gulf with the Arabian Sea and approximately 20% of the oil traded worldwide passes through it. For this reason, any attack against vessels in this area has an immediate impact on maritime security and international energy markets
.
In addition to the Thai vessel, two other commercial vessels were also hit at different points nearby. A Japanese-flagged container ship was hit about 25 miles off the coast of the United Arab Emirates, although it suffered only minor damage and no injuries were reported among the crew. A third ship was also hit about 50 miles northwest of Dubai
