An Islamic terrorist attack left at least one dead and multiple injured at a gay festival in Berlin

An attack that occurred on Saturday night near one of the largest LGBT pride celebrations in Europe left one person dead and 29 others injured, after a man rammed a minivan into a group of pedestrians and subsequently attacked several people with a machete. The main suspect in the attack, which German authorities are investigating as an Islamist-inspired assault, later died after being shot by police during an operation in Berlin.

The attack took place around 10:00 PM local time, in Tiergarten park, near the Brandenburg Gate and an area that had previously been part of the route for the ''Christopher Street Day'' (CSD), the name by which the pride parade is known in Germany. Hundreds of thousands of people had gathered in Berlin during the day to participate in one of the largest LGBT demonstrations on the continent.

According to authorities, the driver of a white minivan suddenly veered into a pedestrian area within the park, hitting several people before crashing into a tree. After leaving the vehicle, the attacker reportedly fled on foot and began assaulting other people with a bladed weapon, apparently a machete.

The attack forced organizers to prematurely interrupt activities related to the parade and caused shock in a city that remained on alert due to a series of previous attacks carried out using vehicles and bladed weapons. The deceased victim and the 29 injured were transported or treated by emergency services, while security forces deployed a large operation to locate the perpetrator.

Who was the Islamic terrorist behind the attack

The German Interior Minister, Alexander Dobrindt, identified the main suspect as Abdul Ballout, 21 years old. Authorities indicated that the young man had previously drawn the attention of security forces due to a history of offenses, a process of radicalization, and multiple links to the Islamist environment.

Dobrindt explained that Ballout had previously been sentenced to one year and ten months in prison, although the sentence had been suspended. German media reported that the suspect was a German citizen with Lebanese roots and had shown sympathy for the Islamic State (ISIS). According to published information, the young man had traveled to the Middle East last year with the intention of joining the terrorist group, although his attempt reportedly failed.

Subsequently, Ballout was convicted in Germany for preparing a serious act of subversive violence. These background details are now a central piece of the investigation to determine the motivations behind the attack and to establish whether it was a planned terrorist action or an individual act inspired by jihadist ideology.

The police and the prosecution had requested the public's assistance in locating the suspect, but warned that he could be armed and dangerous, recommending avoiding any direct contact with him. During the early hours of Sunday, agents searched an apartment in the Berlin district of Schöneberg, but did not find the suspect at the location.

The search extended across various points in the German capital, with the participation of helicopters and agents from several federal states. The operation culminated on Sunday afternoon when police located the main suspect in a community garden complex located in the Berlin district of Spandau.

According to German authorities, Ballout died after police shot him during the operation. Although an intense search had initially been deployed to apprehend him, the main suspect ended up being shot before he could be brought to justice to answer for the hit-and-run and subsequent assaults.
