A young Spanish woman will agree to euthanasia: Her tragic life and the failed role of the State

Noelia Castillo Ramos, a 25-year-old Spanish girl who was left with irreversible paraplegia after throwing herself out of a building after being the victim of gang rape in a juvenile center, will agree to euthanasia this Thursday, March 26, after months of legal disputes and a prolonged picture of physical and emotional suffering.

His story generated controversy in Spain because of the role of the State in this whole process, questioned for not having guaranteed his protection at critical moments in his life, but which finally enabled the process to end his existence.

Noelia was born in a complex family environment, beset by psychological problems and addictions from her parents. This situation meant that he spent a large part of his childhood and adolescence in juvenile centers, without achieving stability that would allow him to develop under adequate

conditions.

It was precisely in one of those centers where, in 2022, he suffered multiple sexual assault, a fact that marked a definitive breaking point. After that episode, on October 4 of that same year, the young woman threw herself from the fifth floor of a building in a suicide attempt

Although it survived, the consequences were devastating. As a result of the fall, she was left with complete irreversible paraplegia, leaving her bedridden in a wheelchair

Added to this were other serious sequelae, such as sensory disorders, neuropathic pain, fecal incontinence and total functional dependence that prevented him from regaining a minimally autonomous life.

Since then, his physical and emotional situation has deteriorated profoundly. During her treatment at the Guttman Institute in Badalona, the doctors themselves recorded her condition: “The desire to request euthanasia has prevailed”, “she says that she does not want to live”, they recorded in their clinical reports while the young woman was still in rehabilitation

Finally, on April 10, 2024, Noelia formalized her request for euthanasia before the Catalan Guarantee and Evaluation Commission (CGAC), beginning a process that went through

different legal instances until its final approval.

Recently, in an interview, the young woman detailed the physical and emotional conditions she has been suffering since that traumatic episode, describing a life marked by constant pain and the impossibility of recovering an acceptable quality of life.

Thus, her story generated a great debate: while the State failed to take care of her and did not support her after the rape she suffered, now the system ended up enabling the final instance to end her life.
