A mural dedicated to Anne Frank and Holocaust writer and survivor Primo Levi was vandalized again in the Italian city of Milan, in a new episode that reflects the worrying rise of antisemitism in Europe.

The work, created by contemporary artist AleXsandro Palombo on the occasion of the International Holocaust Remembrance Day, is located on a wall of the Montello barracks and depicts Anne Frank and Primo Levi sitting face to face under a sky filled with yellow Star of David. The artistic intervention is accompanied by the phrase "Memory is no longer enough".

The attackers spray-painted antisemitic messages and damaged the mural

The perpetrators of the attack covered the original inscription with the phrase "Nazis Zionist colonizers" and also vandalized the face of Primo Levi, one of the main figures in the memory of the Shoah.

The incident generated strong condemnation from Israeli authorities and organizations linked to the preservation of Holocaust memory.

The Israeli ambassador to Italy, Jonathan Peled, condemned the attack and stated that "vandalizing a symbolic place of the memory of Anne Frank and Primo Levi means attacking the memory of the Shoah and our collective duty to never forget".

He also asserted that "antisemitic hatred, in all its forms, must be clearly and responsibly rejected", and emphasized that "memory is a commitment that no hateful graffiti can erase".

This is not the first time the work has been attacked

The mural had already been the target of vandalism in February, just a few days after its inauguration, when the face of Primo Levi was also damaged.

In recent years, other works by AleXsandro Palombo dedicated to the victims and survivors of the Holocaust have suffered similar attacks. Among them are murals depicting Liliana Segre, Sami Modiano, and Edith Bruck, recognized survivors of Nazi persecution.

Several of these artistic interventions were later incorporated into the Holocaust Museum of Rome and are currently exhibited in the vicinity of the Portico of Octavia, located in the historic Jewish ghetto of the Italian capital.

The new attack again highlights the increase in antisemitic incidents recorded in various European countries and the persistence of assaults against symbols related to the memory of the Shoah and the victims of Nazism.
