After his meeting with Trump, Conor McGregor launches his bid for the presidency of Ireland.
The popular Irish fighter announced his candidacy for the presidency of Ireland to combat illegal immigration
Conor McGregor, popular MMA fighter, has announced his candidacy for the presidency of Ireland, just a few days after his successful visit to the White House.
McGregor, made the announcement through an Instagram post. In the image, the fighter appears in front of a private jet and wearing a cap with the slogan "Make Ireland Great Again."
The post also includes a message in which he criticizes the EU Migration Pact, stating that its full implementation must be done by June 12, 2026. McGregor promises to oppose the pact and present a referendum law on the issue if he is elected president.

In his message, McGregor asserts that he is the only one who will oppose the Irish government and that the people must decide on the migration pact, arguing that this is the essence of democracy.
In a speech at the White House, McGregor had stated that Ireland was close to losing its "Irishness" and criticized the Irish government for not acting properly and for allocating the country's money to problems outside its borders.
He also took the opportunity to praise Donald Trump's work ethic, with whom he met at the White House. The visit was met with praise in Ireland, with many people recalling St. Patrick's Day and its great popularity in the American community.

McGregor, who has never held a political office, has expressed that he would be the "only logical choice" for the presidency of Ireland. Currently, Ireland is presided over by the social democrat Michael D. Higgins, who is serving his second term.
However, McGregor claims that his approach would be much more active and people-oriented, criticizing the traditional political system and promising to take measures to hold politicians accountable for what he considers poor management.
He has also pointed out that, if he were to become president, he would have the power to dissolve the Dáil (the Irish parliament) if satisfactory answers were not given on the country's issues.

In his comments from December 2023, McGregor highlighted that potential competitors for the presidency, such as Gerry Adams, Bertie Ahern, and Enda Kenny, are older figures with deep-rooted ties to their respective parties, while he presents himself as a young and non-partisan option, which would allow him to connect better with the people.
McGregor's candidacy has also received support from figures like Elon Musk and Andrew Tate, who back him for his unconventional approach and lack of political affiliations.
McGregor's presidential candidacy faces some obstacles, especially due to the need to receive support from 20 members of the Oireachtas (the Irish parliament) or from four of the 31 local governments to be officially nominated.

Additionally, the strongest options for the presidency include political figures like Bertie Ahern and Mairead McGuinness, who have a long track record in Irish politics.
The general elections in Ireland in November 2024 resulted in a victory for the Fianna Fáil party, which retained the majority of the seats, and centrist and center-right parties are expected to continue dominating Irish politics.
However, McGregor remains a highly recognized figure, and his candidacy could generate debate and polarization in Irish society.
