Anthropic decided at the last moment to suspend a modification to the billing system of Claude Agent SDK that was going to significantly increase the cost of using the tool for advanced developers and third-party applications.

The measure was set to take effect on June 16, but the company announced that it is on hold while it reviews an alternative that better fits the needs of its users. The decision was well received by those who intensively use the Claude ecosystem for programming and automation.

What change did Anthropic want to implement

The company announced on May 13 a new billing policy for the use of Claude Agent SDK, including third-party applications and the programmatic command claude -p.

The proposal consisted of separating that consumption from the traditional use of Claude through the chat interface or the official Claude CLI tool. Instead of using the limits included in subscriptions, consumption would be charged according to the standard rates of the Anthropic API.

As compensation, users would receive a monthly credit equivalent to the value of their subscription. However, for more intensive users, the scheme implied a significant increase in costs.

Why developers rejected the measure

Currently, those using Claude Agent SDK can take advantage of the weekly limits included in their subscription plans, allowing them to access a considerable volume of use without incurring additional consumption costs.

According to various analyses conducted by the community, users of the Claude Opus plan quickly recover the value of the subscription compared to what it would cost to use the API separately.

Developer Matthew Diakonov explained that a programmer using Claude as the main assistant for writing code can exceed the economic break-even point during the first week of use.

For their part, the team behind the code editor Zed warned that the change represented a significant cost increase for those working intensively with automated agents.

Anthropic reversed its decision and suspended the update

When the change was about to take effect, Anthropic updated its official documentation and confirmed that it decided to pause the implementation.

“For now, nothing has changed,” the company stated. Additionally, it noted that it is working on a new proposal that better supports the ways users build tools and projects using Claude subscriptions.

The decision comes at a key moment for Anthropic

The reversal occurs just weeks after GitHub Copilot implemented similar token-based changes, generating criticism among developers who saw their expenses unexpectedly rise.

Moreover, the move coincides with Anthropic's preparations for a possible IPO. According to reports, the company has already submitted confidential documentation to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).

The future of Claude Agent SDK remains uncertain

Although the suspension represents a temporary relief for users, within Anthropic it had already been anticipated that the current model is not sustainable in the long term.

In April, Boris Cherny, head of Claude Code, explained that the current subscriptions were not designed to support the usage pattern of some third-party automated tools.
