Anthropic updated the voice mode of Claude with more powerful models. The company announced this Thursday that users can now choose between the Opus, Sonnet, and Haiku models.

This update comes weeks after OpenAI launched a new family of conversational models and updated the voice mode of ChatGPT. With this move, Anthropic aims to make Claude a more user-friendly tool for voice interaction.

How Claude's voice mode worked until now

The voice mode of Claude was launched last year and operated with the Haiku model. It provided quick responses but was not designed for complex tasks.

With the new update, the voice mode automatically selects the last model the person used in the text chat. By default, it uses its fastest version.

Anthropic noted that the new voice mode assists in longer conversations. Among the possible uses, it mentioned providing feedback on communication style, rehearsing a proposal for a client, and brainstorming on market research.

Integration with Gmail, Slack, Notion, and other apps

The voice mode of Claude can connect with applications like Gmail, Google Calendar, Slack, Canva, and Notion. This allows, for example, updating a meeting schedule, drafting an email, or creating a document in Notion using voice commands.

This feature marks a difference from OpenAI's voice mode, which updated its conversational style but still cannot use external tools to complete tasks.

Multilingual support in Claude's voice mode

Earlier this year, Anthropic added multilingual support to Claude's voice mode, currently in beta. Users can speak in different languages, although they must specify it manually.

At the moment, the company offers support for English, French, German, Hindi, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese (from Brazil), and Spanish (from Latin America and Spain).

Who can access the new voice mode

The new voice mode is available in beta for all users across various platforms. However, free users will be restricted to the Haiku model, with only one connected application.

Anthropic did not make changes to the voice model with this release and did not detail what technology it uses for voice synthesis. Unlike OpenAI's release, users would not find conversational improvements such as better handling of interruptions.
