The Frente Amplio lawyer testified before a judge in February 2025 following a complaint of media violence

At the end of January 2025, from his personal X account (formerly Twitter), the Frente Amplio lawyer published an excerpt from a court ruling regarding a minor, which led to him being reported and appearing before a court.

The facts

In mid-January of this year, the Socialist Party launched Ceretta as a pre-candidate for the Montevideo intendancy.

This was reported by the press. The other proclaimed pre-candidates were Mario Bergara, Verónica Piñeiro, and Salvador Schelotto.

These three were ultimately proclaimed as candidates for the capital's intendancy for the May 11 elections.

The reaction on social media

After it became known that the Frente Amplio lawyer was one of the pre-candidates, some users of the social network X (formerly Twitter) began to post that the professor at the Faculty of Law of the Universidad de la República had been reported in mid-2021 for media aggression against a girl just 6 years old who had different abilities.

What happened in 2021?

That year, the girl's parents were forced to file a complaint in court against the Socialist professor because he repeatedly released references to the minor through various media outlets.

He did so both on a radio show on El Espectador, where Ceretta is a columnist, and in statements to La Diaria and El País (see clippings in this article).

In response to the ongoing attacks on the little girl, the parents decided to take legal action to stop the insults against the child.

His 2025 attack

In his "defense," at the end of last January, Ceretta posted a tweet with an excerpt from the 2021 court ruling to "demonstrate" that, supposedly, that year the judge had exonerated him from responsibility for the media aggression against the minor.

When the girl's parents learned that the Frente Amplio lawyer was once again referring to their young daughter on social media, they filed a complaint with the Specialized Family Court, 5th Division, presided over by Judge Soledad Nin.

His post at the end of January received a great deal of views, and other users joined in the fierce media attack against the minor.

One of them was Enrique Amestoy, who publicly presents himself as a "hacker" (computer pirate), and who was also reported in the same court.

This individual has a weekly column on Tv Ciudad where he discusses technology.

The complaint filed in court states, among other things, that the Faculty professor "exposes the minor to hatred and public contempt".

It further states, "absolutely gratuitously and without any need, he attacks the little girl. He is publicly exposing the child to outrage, contempt, insult, dishonor, and public vilification."

Ceretta testified for the aggression against the minor

On February 3, 2025, the hearing took place where Judge Nin instructed both aggressors to cease their media attacks against a young girl who also has different abilities.

The victim's defense cited the Gender Violence Law 19.580, which Ceretta has publicly defended many times. This law refers in its Article 4 to the impairment of the enjoyment or exercise of human rights. Article 5 refers to media violence against a girl or a woman.

The victim is a girl just 10 years old who suffers from a severe disability, a situation perfectly known to Ceretta and Amestoy when they attacked her on social media.

Specifically, the court ruling states that the two accused must not "mention the girl's name on social media."

Accusations of harassment against his students

For years, there have been reports circulating at the Faculty of Law of the Universidad de la República that Ceretta would harass his female students.

Several female students, all young, have complained that the Socialist Party professor allegedly harassed them in various ways.

As far as is known, the Faculty authorities have not taken measures regarding Ceretta for the harassment of his female students.

There should be serious and responsible reflection on these gratuitous media attacks against minors.

Juan Ceretta, in addition to being a university professor, is currently a candidate for departmental councilor of Montevideo for the Socialist Party, Frente Amplio.

Frente Amplio has always maintained a discourse in favor of women who suffer violence.

Having a minor aggressor as a candidate for departmental councilor is not the best way to honor that discourse.
