After several races dominated by his teammate, Andrea Kimi Antonelli, George Russell returned to the top of the podium at the Austrian Grand Prix after an intense race from start to finish at the Red Bull Ring. The Mercedes driver maintained the lead from the start, withstood the constant pressure from Max Verstappen, and crossed the finish line with just 1.611 seconds ahead of the Dutchman.
The competition had a frantic start under extreme temperatures at the circuit. Russell successfully defended the first position, while behind him there were overtakes between Lewis Hamilton, Charles Leclerc, and Verstappen. At the other end of the standings, Colapinto's start was ruined by a loss of power in the Alpine that dropped him to last place.

As the laps went by, the battle for victory shifted from on-track maneuvers to strategy. Verstappen was the first to show a pace capable of unsettling Russell, although he had to push his tires harder than usual to close the gap. Mercedes, on the other hand, managed the timing of pit stops and tire wear better, a decision that proved decisive when the Brit made his last stop before his direct rivals and found clear track to set fast laps.
The race also saw several incidents that affected the outcome. The early retirements of the Cadillacs, the Virtual Safety Car caused by Carlos Sainz's issue, and a second neutralization to remove a bollard altered strategies, but none of those moments were enough to change the course of the battle for victory. Russell always maintained control and, although Verstappen closed the gap at various points, he never found the opportunity to launch a definitive attack.
Meanwhile, Colapinto built a race that improved as it went on. After overtaking the Aston Martins and taking advantage of retirements, he found himself stuck behind Alex Albon for several laps, a delay that prevented him from closing in on the front group sooner. Only in the second half did he manage to find a better rhythm, leaving the Williams driver behind and then overtaking Esteban Ocon to close in on Oliver Bearman, although he no longer had enough laps to attempt another overtake.

Russell finally crossed the finish line with just over a second and a half advantage over Verstappen to celebrate his second victory of the season. Antonelli completed the podium, while Oscar Piastri, Lewis Hamilton, Isack Hadjar, Lando Norris, Charles Leclerc, Liam Lawson, and Arvid Lindblad rounded out the top ten.
For its part, at Alpine Pierre Gasly finished 12th, outside the points zone, and Franco Colapinto finished 15th after recovering from a difficult start marked by a lack of power at the start.
