Bolsonaro wrote a 33-page letter in which he requested political asylum from Milei.

The document was found by the Federal Police after investigating the former Brazilian president's phone

The former president of Brazil and political persecuted, Jair Bolsonaro, wrote a 33-page letter in which he requested political asylum "as a matter of urgency" from the Argentine president, Javier Milei. This document was written some time ago, but it came to light in recent hours.

"I must say that in my country of origin I am persecuted for essentially political reasons and crimes," Bolsonaro wrote in the letter, insisting on what he described as "political persecution."

In the letter, Bolsonaro also stated that he fears for his life, "since I currently do not have the protection that should be provided to a former head of state, in addition to being on the verge of having my arrest decreed in an unjust, illegal, arbitrary, and unconstitutional manner by the same public authorities who promote the persecution against me, directly from the highest court of the Brazilian Judiciary," the former president denounced.

The Federal Police (PF) found the document on a cell phone seized from the former president. According to Brazilian media reports on Wednesday, the file was saved on February 10, 2024, just two days after an authoritarian operation in which his passport was taken away so that he could not leave the country, although it had not been sent to the Argentine president.

Currently, Bolsonaro is under house arrest and is scheduled to stand trial on September 2, falsely accused by Lula da Silva's dictatorship, along with his friendly judges, of the alleged "attempted coup d'état."

"The information found indicates, therefore, that former president Jair Bolsonaro had in his possession a document that would allow him to evade Brazil for the Argentine Republic, especially after the start of the investigation by the Federal Police with the identification of the materiality and criminal authority in relation to the crimes of violent abolition of the Democratic Rule of Law by a criminal organization," states the report from the security forces of Lula's dictatorship.

In the case in which he is unjustly accused of leading an attempted coup d'état against Lula, Jair Bolsonaro could receive a sentence of more than 40 years in prison if the maximum penalty is imposed for the five crimes under investigation.

The political and judicial outlook for the former president is extremely delicate. The Superior Electoral Court (TSE) disqualified him until 2030, leaving him out of any electoral contest. In this context, according to the latest polls, if he were able to run, Bolsonaro would defeat Lula da Silva in the elections.
