Boltund in Pokémon TCG Pocket: the strategy that defines the early game

The duo of Yamper and Boltund bursts into the Pokémon TCG Pocket meta with a fast and devastating tactic to dominate the early turns

The A4a Hidden Spring miniset from Pokémon TCG Pocket, released on August 28, brought with it 105 new cards that have revolutionized the game's dynamics. Among them, one of the most impactful was Boltund, whose ability to shine in the early turns makes it one of the best choices for those seeking speed and constant pressure.

This Pokémon  of the Lightning type is not only accessible by obtaining it in booster packs from the expansion, but it can also be redeemed with 150 pack-opening points. Meanwhile,  Yamper, its basic form, can be obtained more economically with 35 points, which makes it easier to build the strategy without major complications.

The tactic: speed and forcefulness

The key to the strategy with Yamper and Boltund is to deploy them quickly and strike before the opponent can set up their defense. Its Defiant Spark move deals 70 damage with just one Lightning Energy, as long as Boltund has taken prior damage. This makes it a unique card: an economical striker that can enter play immediately and make a difference in the first two or three turns.

During this early stage,  most opposing Basic Pokémon can't withstand the impact, which allows players to gain an advantage from the start. At the same time, while Boltund applies pressure on the field, the player can allocate resources to strengthen a more powerful Pokémon on the Bench, ensuring a solid finish in the mid and late game.

Pros and cons of using Boltund

Advantages:

  • High early game damage with minimal Energy cost.
  • Excellent counter against Water decks and those that rely on evolutions.
  • Only gives the opponent one prize card when defeated, since it is not a Pokémon ex.
  • Allows for immediate pressure and creates space for other Pokémon to grow on the Bench.

Disadvantages:

  • Its strategy depends on taking damage to take advantage of Defiant Spark at low cost.
  • Its 120 HP makes it fragile in the mid and late stages of the match.
  • It can be quickly neutralized by opponents with high-powered attacks.

An indispensable tactical resource

In conclusion, Boltund and Yamper are established as an essential duo for players looking to dominate the start of the match. Their speed, their ability to punish opposing evolutions, and the pressure they generate from the first turn make this electric deck a strategic option in the current meta.

This is not a Pokémon designed to close out matches, but rather an accelerator that opens cracks in the enemy's defense and makes it easier for a main striker to finish the job. With the right approach,  Boltund can be the spark that ignites victory.
