The Córdoba Legislature once again came under scrutiny due to a decision that sparked strong controversy.The ruling party suspended the session and called a recess to attend the launch event of Juan Schiaretti's campaign. For the opposition, this was a covert closure of the chamber.
An opposition legislator described the maneuver as a shameful act. He stated that Peronism prioritizes the electoral campaign over the problems of Córdoba's citizens. He warned that the decision reflects the institutional hollowing out of the Legislature.
It was emphasized that the agenda included socially relevant projects that were left unaddressed. Among them were proposals regarding increases in public services, which impact the finances of thousands of families. The session, however, was subordinated to the party event.
Another opposition legislator warned that the ruling party has already turned the Legislature into a space subordinated to campaign needs. He said that days, times, and topics are chosen based on electoral convenience. As a result, the institution loses credibility.
It was also recalled that this is not the first time a session has been postponed for political reasons. The opposition fears that during the months leading up to the elections, parliamentary activity will be further reduced. “Peronism chooses between the problems of Córdoba's citizens and the campaign, and always chooses the campaign,” an opposition member stated.
Amid the controversy, the ruling party managed to pass the new rural roads law. The regulation modernizes the scheme in place since 1978 and incorporates a comprehensive management system. The project received support from a large part of the political blocs.
The Executive highlighted that the law responds to a demand from road consortia and producers. The initiative aims to change the way production is transported and how rural families access their homes. Legislators from different groups reached an agreement on that.
Nevertheless, the contrast became evident. While the campaign photo was prioritized and urgent debates were postponed, the Legislature once again showed its lack of independence. For the opposition, the province needs an active Parliament, not an appendage of the ruling party.
