A report by the Ecosur foundation, from the Bolsa de Comercio de Córdoba, revealed that Córdoba is one of the cheapest provinces for vacationing among the most popular destinations both in Argentina and abroad.

The report signed by economists Tania Paladini, Oriana Pereyra, Agustín Holt, and Ángel Osman compares the cost for a typical family to spend one week in July, including expenses for accommodation (three-star hotel), meals, drinks, local transportation, and arrival by air from Buenos Aires.

These are the cities of Córdoba, Salta, Mendoza, and Bariloche; and the favorite international destinations for Argentinians to travel: Santiago de Chile, Rio de Janeiro, Punta Cana (Dominican Republic), Miami, and Cancun (Mexico).

"The cheapest domestic destination for vacationing among those analyzed is the city of Córdoba, whose total basket cost is close to US$2,800," Ecosur highlights.

Vacation expenses in July in Córdoba

The report states that US$1,039 is allocated for on-site consumption; US$608 for transportation; and US$1,159 for accommodation. In this last expense, the city has an advantage over all national destinations and also almost all international ones, except for Rio de Janeiro (US$944 for the stay). All figures in the study are calculated at the official dollar rate.

The cost of spending one night in Córdoba is almost a third of that in Bariloche (US$3,322, the most expensive domestic destination); and is lower than in Mendoza (US$1,680) and Salta (US$1,584).
Córdoba's location, in the center of the country, is a factor that shortens the distance for tourists departing from Buenos Aires and thus lowers transportation costs.

If total spending baskets are compared, vacationing for a week in Córdoba totals US$2,806 for a family; doing the same in Mendoza costs US$3,812; in Salta US$3,815; and in Bariloche US$6,004.

Santiago de Chile, the cheapest international destination

In the Ecosur analysis, if air travel expenses are included, there is no destination outside the country that is cheaper for winter vacationing than Córdoba (first place), Mendoza (second), and Salta.

Santiago de Chile is the first international destination to appear in the ranking after the aforementioned provinces, with a budget of US$4,841 to cover the total cost of a week of tourism for a typical family. In the case of international travel, the foundation included expenses for accommodation, meals, transportation, and extras such as medical insurance. Bariloche (US$6,004) is somewhat more expensive than Santiago de Chile.

Outside Argentina, Cancun and Miami, the most expensive destinations

The most expensive places to vacation among those surveyed are Cancun (Mexico) and Miami (United States), whose total vacation baskets exceed US$11,000: the weekly family budget was US$11,239 for Cancun and US$11,160 for Miami.

Meanwhile, in Rio de Janeiro, the main vacation destination for Argentinians abroad, the total vacation basket costs about US$6,300; while in Punta Cana its value is US$7,635.

Some of the information sources surveyed by Ecosur to build the baskets are the Booking platform (accommodation), the Numbeo price database, McDonald's prices in different locations, and ticket costs on Despegar.

Air transfers are always calculated from Buenos Aires and as direct flights.
