A debut to forget for Alpine: Doohan crashed and Gasly was out of the top 10

Under adverse weather conditions, Jack Doohan had an accident on the first lap while Pierre Gasly couldn't score points

The start of the 2025 Formula 1 season at the Australian Grand Prix was not what Alpine expected. Jack Doohan was out on the first lap and Pierre Gasly couldn't finish in the Top 10, failing to score points.

The Melbourne race saw increased difficulty due to adverse weather conditions. Minutes before the start of the Grand Prix, rain had complicated the asphalt, causing difficulties for several drivers. Although the storm dissipated at the time of the start, the surface remained slippery, leading to several incidents. Formula 2, in fact, had been suspended due to the adverse weather.

The track conditions became apparent almost instantly, when several rookie and not-so-rookie drivers had accidents in the initial laps, including the Australian Alpine driver, who lasted only four corners. The other affected were Isack Hadjar (RB), at turn 2 of the formation lap, Carlos Sainz (Williams), at turn 14 of the first lap, Fernando Alonso (Aston Martin), at turn 7 of lap 34, and Liam Lawson (Red Bull) and Gabriel Bortoleto (Kick Sauber), both on lap 47.

Doohan's retirement did not go unnoticed in Argentina. Before the season, there was speculation that poor performance by the Australian could open the door for Colapinto, who currently serves as Alpine's reserve driver. This early elimination only fuels those rumors and a possible debut in the short or medium term for the Argentine.

Despite the incidents, the race continued and ended with Lando Norris's victory for McLaren with a time of 1:42:06.304. On the podium were Max Verstappen (+0.895s) for Red Bull and George Russell (+8.481s) for Mercedes. Meanwhile, Pierre Gasly, the other Alpine driver, finished eleventh (+26.502s) despite having fewer rivals due to accidents and retirements, and was left out of the point-scoring positions.
