A Democratic congresswoman and her husband were murdered by a former employee of Tim Walz.

In a crime associated with political interests within the Democratic Party, Congresswoman Melissa Hortman was murdered for going against her party's interests

A violent and tragic attack with a strong political motivation left two people dead and two others seriously injured in the early hours of Saturday, June 14, in Minnesota.

The victims include the former leader of the State House of Representatives, Melissa Hortman, and her husband, Mark Hortman, who were killed in their home in Brooklyn Park. Shortly before, the same assailant had shot State Senator John Hoffman and his wife Yvette in their home in Champlin, about 8 kilometers (5 miles) away.

According to Brooklyn Park Police, the suspect, Vance Luther Boelter, age 57, was impersonating a law enforcement officer, using a black bulletproof vest, a blue jersey, blue pants, a badge, a Taser-type weapon, and other police equipment.

He was even driving a vehicle with flashing lights designed to look like a patrol car. The emergency alert sent to residents warned that he was a white man, armed and dangerous.

Boelter managed to enter both homes by pretending to be a police officer. Once inside, he opened fire on the victims. In the Hoffmans' case, both survived after sustaining multiple gunshot wounds and were rushed to the hospital, where they are reported to be stable after surgery.

However, Melissa and Mark Hortman were shot and killed in their home; Melissa died at the scene, while Mark passed away despite paramedics' attempts to save his life.

Authorities, including Governor Tim Walz, described the shootings as a "political assassination". The suspect reportedly left pamphlets with the phrase "No Kings", linked to planned protests against the Trump administration.

Additionally, a manifesto and a list of names of other politicians were found inside the assailant's vehicle, which reinforces the theory that this was a planned action with ideological motivations.

What is characteristic of this case is the recent electoral history of Melissa Hortman and Senator Hoffman. Both state legislators voted against what was supported by the Democratic Party. In addition, the senator aligned himself with the Republican Party in a vote on the measure that rejects free healthcare for illegal immigrants.

Boelter, the alleged striker, was previously an official appointed by Governor Walz in 2019 to be part of the Governor's Workforce Development Board. He had also been a member of a similar council under former Governor Mark Dayton in 2016.

After committing the double homicide at the Hortman residence, Boelter was confronted by police officers who replied to the incident. Upon arrival, the officers saw a supposed patrol car at the entrance and an individual dressed as an officer leaving the residence.

As they approached, the suspect opened fire on the officers, who returned fire. However, the assailant managed to flee on foot and remains at large at the time of this report.

Authorities established a shelter-in-place order within a three-mile radius around the Edinburgh golf course, near the Hortman home, as the intense search for the suspect continues.
