New York Attorney General, Letitia James, pleaded not guilty this Friday to two federal charges: bank fraud and making a false statement to a financial institution, in connection with a case related to the purchase of a property in Virginia more than five years ago.
The case, which could result in up to 60 years in prison and fines exceeding two million dollars, has sparked a political and moral storm, casting doubt on the credibility of one of the most controversial Democratic figures and an openly hostile opponent of President Donald Trump.
During her 30-minute appearance before Judge Jamar Walker, James, who is 67 years old, replied somewhat nervously to the standard questions and was released on her own recognizance. Her attorney, influential Democrat Abbe Lowell, entered the not guilty plea on both charges.
James podría enfrentarse a 60 años de prisión en caso de ser declarada culpable
However, beyond the judicial proceedings, attention focused on James's statements after the hearing: with a defiant tone and surrounded by supporters shouting "We Stand With Tish," the attorney general attempted to present herself as the victim of an alleged political persecution.
In an attempt to cloak her defense in moral drama, James plagiarized the"I Have a Dream" speech by Martin Luther King Jr., saying: "I believe that justice will roll down like water and righteousness like a mighty stream," an adulterated version of the original text. The quote provoked outrage on social media and among African American religious leaders, who accused her of "trivializing" King's legacy to cover up her own corruption.
James was indicted on October 9 by a federal grand jury for falsifying mortgage documentation in the purchase of a three-bedroom house in Norfolk, Virginia, for $109,600, in August 2020.
According to prosecutors, James signed a clause that granted her a preferential mortgage rate in exchange for declaring that it would be her "primary residence." However, subsequent investigations revealed that she never lived in the property, which was used as a rental home for her great-niece, Nakia Thompson, allegedly generating an illegal benefit estimated at $19,000.

The prosecution, led by Roger Keller, reported that it could draft to ten witnesses, while the defense is preparing a series of motions to dismiss the indictment.
Lowell keeps that the case is "illegal and vindictive," arguing that acting prosecutor Lindsey Halligan, who led the investigation, was "irregularly" appointed by Donald Trump and allegedly maintained extrajudicial communications with outlets such as Lawfare to influence public opinion.
However, beyond the procedural maneuvers, the case has exposed James's double standard. The self-proclaimed "champion of the Rule of Law" now faces the same accusations of fraud and manipulation that she herself used to pursue her political enemies.
James ha sido una de las personas más hostiles frente al presidente Trump
In 2024, James obtained a civil judgment against Trump Organization, which she described as an "example of corporate corruption," but now she must answer for lying on financial documents and benefiting from a loan with preferential terms.
In her statement after the hearing, James presented herself as a victim of the "political use of the judicial system." "This is not about me, but about a justice system that has been weaponized for revenge," she proclaimed, without providing evidence of her innocence.
State ethics financial records also reveal that James listed the Norfolk property as an investment and reported rental income between $1,000 and $5,000 annually since 2020, contradicting the personal residence claim she used with the bank.

Worse still, the complaint that originated the case was referred to the Department of Justice by William Pulte, director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency, after detecting inconsistencies in a second loan application submitted by James in 2023.
James's defense could become even more complicated due to legal problems within her family circle. Her great-niece, Nakia Thompson, was charged this week with threats and violent language after an altercation with an assistant principal, on the same day James's indictment was announced.
The trial is scheduled to begin on January 26, 2026, with a preliminary hearing on December 5. Although James claims that "her faith in justice is unshakable," her adversaries maintain that this process marks the beginning of the end of a career built on the politicization of law and moral opportunism.
