The United States Department of Energy announced that it will return $13 billion in "unobligated" funds that were originally allocated to programs related to former Democratic President Joe Biden's climate agenda. The decision, presented as part of an effort to eliminate "wasteful and unnecessary" spending, was celebrated by conservative and pro-market groups.
Larry Behrens, spokesperson for Power the Future, a nonprofit organization representing workers in reliable energy sources, told the media that this return demonstrates respect for taxpayers and a willingness to eliminate inefficient programs.
According to Behrens, this is a step toward accountability and a way to let free markets, not bureaucrats, define the country's energy future. In his words, "the American people were clear at the polls: they don't want public dollars to continue being wasted on failed green projects."

In an official statement, the DOE stated that this decision reflects the Trump administration's commitment to stopping excessive spending and refocusing on the department's core mission: ensuring affordable, reliable, and secure energy for all Americans, while improving efficiency and the responsible use of public funds.
The measure is aligned with the Working Families Tax Relief Act, previously signed by Trump, which ordered the DOE to reduce federal spending and accelerate the return of unused funds to the Treasury.
Energy Secretary Chris Wright stated that voters chose Trump largely because of the previous administration's "reckless" spending on climate policies, which only contributed to inflation without providing concrete benefits to the population. "Thanks to President Trump and Congress, those days are over," Wright said.
Behrens also criticized the management of funds under the Biden administration, mentioning that more than $6 billion allocated to the electric vehicle charging station program was flagged as wasteful.
