A man armed with kitchen utensils was arrested this week after he tried to pose as an FBI agent to free an inmate accused of a high-profile murder at the Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC) in Brooklyn, federal prosecutors reported.
The incident occurred on Wednesday night, shortly before 7 p.m., when Mark Anderson, 36 years old and originally from Minnesota, showed up at the admission area of the prison claiming that he had a court order to release Luigi Mangione, who was being held without bail. Mangione faces federal charges for the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, which occurred in December 2024.
According to court documents and law enforcement sources, Anderson stated that he had a document "signed by a judge" that authorized the immediate release of the defendant.
However, when the facility staff requested his official credentials, the man only presented a Minnesota state driver's license, issued in the city of Mankato.

During the exchange, Anderson also claimed that he was carrying weapons in his bag, which led the guards to carry out a security inspection. Inside, they found a fork and a circular steel blade described as similar to a pizza cutter.
Although no firearms were found, the items triggered alarms among the prison staff due to the nature of the attempted impersonation and the maximum-security environment.
According to court records, before he was detained Anderson threw a bundle of documents at the Federal Bureau of Prisons staff. Minutes later, he was arrested without any injuries being reported and formally charged with impersonating an FBI agent, a federal crime. Authorities indicated that the attempt did not pose a real risk of escape but emphasized the seriousness of the act.

Police sources indicated that Anderson had recently moved to New York after a job opportunity that ultimately did not materialize. In recent weeks, he had been working at a pizzeria in the city, although the name of the establishment has not been disclosed. This detail drew attention due to the items found in his possession at the time of his arrest.
The episode occurred just days before Luigi Mangione was due to appear again before a federal court in Manhattan for a pretrial conference scheduled for Friday.
Mangione, 27 years old and a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, is accused of having executed Brian Thompson on December 4, 2024, on a sidewalk in Midtown Manhattan, in front of the place where UnitedHealthcare was holding its annual investors conference.

According to the prosecution, Mangione had planned the attack in a premeditated manner. Investigators maintain that the defendant wrote in a notebook his intention to "kill" Thompson, motivated by what he described as "parasitic" practices by the company, in reference to the alleged systematic denial of medical claims. Despite these accusations, Mangione has pleaded not guilty.
Mark Anderson was scheduled to appear for the first time before a federal judge on Thursday afternoon. Authorities continue to evaluate the circumstances of the case and whether the defendant acted alone or was driven by some type of additional motivation.
