The defeat against Instituto accelerated a decision that was already looming in San Lorenzo. With the team sinking in the lower part of Zone A of the Clausura Tournament and no footballing reaction in sight, the management decided that Néstor Gorosito would not continue as coach of the Ciclón.
The decision was made this Tuesday, after a meeting between the coach and the directors along with the Football Council at the Sports City, prior to training. Thus, Pipo ends his second stint in Boedo just a month and a half after taking over.
The numbers largely explain the outcome. In eight matches managed between the local championship and the Copa Argentina, Gorosito achieved 2 victories, 2 draws, and 4 defeats. The last defeat, 1-0 against Instituto in Alta Córdoba, left San Lorenzo in second-to-last position in Zone A with only 7 points out of 21 possible and marked the end of the cycle.
Gorosito achieved only 2 victories in 8 matches at San Lorenzo
To that irregularity in the tournament was added the blow in the Copa Argentina. The blue-and-red team was eliminated in the round of 32 after losing on penalties to Deportivo Riestra, in a competition where they also failed to find answers.
Despite the poor sporting present, Gorosito had not publicly considered the possibility of resigning after the defeat against Instituto. In a press conference, he had tried to project a reaction based on the arrival of Facundo Farías, who came on loan from Estudiantes. "It will be extraordinary if he can play because it will completely change the face of the team", the coach had stated about the forward.
However, the confidence expressed after the match was not enough to keep him in the position. The management assessed the situation and decided to put an end to his second cycle, which came 22 years after his first stint at the club.
Gorosito was confident that he could turn around the situation at San Lorenzo
Gorosito's departure further deepens the instability that San Lorenzo is experiencing this year. With Pipo's departure, the Ciclón has already seen three different coaches this season: Damián Ayude, Gustavo Álvarez, and now Gorosito himself.
Now, San Lorenzo will have to search for a coach again in a complicated footballing context. The team has been relegated in its zone in the Clausura and needs an immediate reaction to change the course of a campaign that, so far, has once again been marked by changes on the bench and the lack of results.
