The federal forces managed to prevent a serious terrorist attack against a critical high-pressure gas facility on January 31 in the Bosques de Ezeiza area, in the southern part of the Buenos Aires metropolitan area.
The incident is being investigated by Federal Justice as a "terrorist attack" directed at a strategic target, due to the nature of the chosen target, the type of weaponry used, and the placement of the explosives found at the site.
According to security sources with access to the investigation, the episode was triggered by an alert about the presence of armed individuals in a sensitive sector. A corporal of the Argentine National Gendarmerie detected two individuals riding a black motorcycle in the vicinity of a main gas pipeline. When the suspects noticed the presence of the uniformed officer, they began their escape and fired shots with 9-millimeter caliber weapons.

For the investigators, those shots did not have the sole objective of ensuring the escape. The main hypothesis holds that the suspects sought to detonate the flammable material previously placed at the site in order to cause a massive explosion, a method associated with terrorist attacks against strategic infrastructure.
After the suspects fled, a search operation was deployed that made it possible to gauge the scope of the planned attack. In key sectors of the system, clearly marked with signs reading "danger: high-pressure gas", two grenades ready to detonate were found.
In addition, bottles filled with fuel were found, strategically placed on the relief pipes of the main pipeline, along with spent 9 mm shell casings at a short distance from the explosives.
The selection of the target and the placement of the material are considered decisive for classifying the incident as terrorism. According to sources with access to the investigation, it was a deliberate attempt to cause massive damage, generate social panic, and disrupt the energy supply.

The gas pipeline involved is part of the critical network that supplies large areas of the Metropolitan Area, so a detonation would have had catastrophic consequences in human, environmental, and economic terms.
Due to the potential impact on national security and because it was an incident that occurred in a protected area, the case remained in the hands of Federal Justice. Federal Court No. 2 of Lomas de Zamora, headed by Judge Vanesa Rocuso, is in charge of the case and ordered the immediate deployment of the Explosives Division of the Argentine Federal Police, as well as Firefighters and Scientific Police personnel, with the objective of neutralizing risks and moving forward with the forensic examinations.
In parallel, an intensive search operation is being carried out in the southern area of the metropolitan region in order to identify and arrest those responsible for the foiled attack, whose motivations and possible connections are still under investigation.
