Hideo Kojima expressed his concern about the advancement of the digital format following the announcement about the end of production of physical discs for PlayStation.
The creator of Metal Gear Solid and Death Stranding warned that the change could also extend to cinema and other digital content.

Hideo Kojima spoke during the Il Cinema in Piazza festival in Rome, where he referred to the future of digital distribution of video games and audiovisual content.
His statements came just days after PlayStation announced that it would stop producing new physical discs starting in January 2028.
"As production ends in 2028, this is related to video games, but I grew up with the physical format, so I find it really sad," the developer stated.

Hideo Kojima explained that he still continues to buy movies on Blu-ray and music discs because he values the ownership of physical content.
He also recalled a reflection he shared in 2021, when he warned that in the future people could lose access to movies, books, and music they enjoy.
During his presentation, he argued that downloaded video games remain stored on the user's hardware, while a complete shift to streaming would change that scenario.
