Traffic in the northern part of Buenos Aires City will undergo significant changes this weekend The Illia Highway will be closed in the direction towards the province of Buenos Aires from 10 PM this Friday, August 14, until Sunday at noon. The decision is due to the progress of the works on the Bajo Nivel Crossing and the Pampa Pedestrian Ring, as reported by the Ministry of Mobility and Infrastructure of the City.

The closure will also affect part of Avenida Cantilo and additional restrictions will be added in the area Those traveling north will need to divert via Figueroa Alcorta or del Libertador avenues. Once past Jorge Newbery Airport, they can rejoin Cantilo.

Additionally, the Paseo del Bajo at the height of Retiro heading north will remain closed throughout the weekend. In that section, heavy vehicles will be diverted via Costanera, Güiraldes, and Cantilo. In the opposite direction, towards the center, both Illia and Lugones will remain open as usual.

Traffic on the Illia will be restored on Sunday at 1 PM. However, during that day and Monday, two or three lanes on the right will remain restricted to complete the work starting tonight.

The Illia highway will be closed for 38 hours starting tonight: which sections are affected and what are the detours

Details of the detours and restrictions

Drivers heading north have two main options: Figueroa Alcorta or del Libertador Both allow bypassing the affected area and returning to Cantilo after the airport. For heavy traffic that normally uses the Paseo del Bajo, the mandatory alternative will be Costanera, Güiraldes, and then Cantilo.

In the direction towards the city center, there will be no changes: Illia and Lugones will remain open The measure aims to minimize the impact while advancing with the structural works. The total closure of 38 hours allows for tasks that cannot be performed with normal traffic flow.

Authorities recommended that residents and those traveling through the area plan ahead and check traffic conditions before leaving. The long weekend is approaching, and traffic tends to be heavier, so the detours may cause delays on alternative avenues.

These restrictions aim to complete a key phase of the Pampa project without permanently interrupting the daily flow of vehicles.

Why these works are being carried out

The closure allows for the advancement of the pilings that will support the structure of the metal pedestrian ring of the Pampa project The initiative aims to create a direct connection between Figueroa Alcorta Avenue and Costanera, with a passage that will go underneath the Belgrano Norte railway tracks and the Lugones and Cantilo highways.

Once completed, the underpass will be 540 meters long, have four lanes, and a clearance height of over four meters This will allow for the passage of buses and emergency vehicles. The project will also include a pedestrian bridge and a bike lane in the shape of a ring, 140 meters in diameter and 440 meters in total length, which will facilitate crossing the tracks and highways on foot.

According to official data, the project will benefit more than 17,000 people and improve the circulation of over 38,000 vehicles daily. The goal is to reduce travel times and alleviate congestion at other crossings in the northern area.

These works aim to create a safer and more direct connection between two key areas of northern Buenos Aires, something that currently forces detours or crossing at congested points. The pedestrian ring and the bike lane will complete the intervention, providing an alternative for pedestrians and cyclists that does not currently exist on this scale.
