President Javier Milei announced that he will declare a national holiday on the day that the players and coaching staff of the Argentine National Team decide to celebrate their return from the 2026 World Cup. The president confirmed that the date will be subject to the team's wishes, which must decide how and when they will reunite with the fans.
“World celebration. Given the concern about the celebrations for the achievement of the Argentine National Team, I inform the public that, based on what the players and coaching staff decide regarding the day to celebrate, it will be declared a national holiday,” wrote Milei on his official X account.
The decision was communicated just hours after the 1-0 defeat against Spain in the final held at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. Despite not achieving the two-time championship, the team led by Lionel Scaloni reached the final of the main football tournament again and completed another historic campaign.
In this way, the Government seeks to facilitate a mass celebration and allow Argentines to welcome the team. Unlike other occasions, the Casa Rosada left the organization and the choice of the day in the hands of the protagonists, avoiding imposing a date without knowing the team's plans in advance.
The Government confirmed a holiday for the people to celebrate with the National Team.
According to the information known so far, the Argentine delegation will begin its return from the United States during the early hours of Monday and is expected to arrive at Ezeiza International Airport between 1 PM and 3 PM. However, it has not yet been confirmed whether the players will participate in a caravan that same day or if they will prefer to postpone the meeting with the fans.
In the Government, they are considering Monday or Tuesday as possibilities, although they emphasized that the decree will be published once the players and coaching staff communicate their decision. “There will be a holiday; it will depend on the day they decide to do it,” official sources stated.
A crowd of fans gathered at the Obelisk to support the national team
The announcement came after Milei publicly thanked the Argentine team's effort during the final. “Thank you very much, players. Until the end with our boots on. Argentina always on top,” the President expressed after the match.
The president highlighted the commitment shown throughout the tournament and decided to support the popular recognition. Now, the decision about the celebration will depend exclusively on the team led by Scaloni and Lionel Messi.
