Latvia's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Latvia, Baiba Braže, stated on January 29, during the annual foreign policy debate in the Saeima, that the country will not accept new migrants and will maintain a firm policy against illegal immigration.
In her address to Parliament, Braže emphasized that the Government's position is "absolutely clear": no to illegal migration and reinforcement of security at the borders.
She highlighted that the border fence has already been completed and expressed her gratitude for the work of the border guards, the National Guard, and other services that work permanently to prevent irregular crossings. According to her, more than 12,000 "essentialized" migrants have been stopped at the border and did not manage to enter the country.

The minister pointed out that Latvia is ready to share its experience in border protection with other European Union member states within the framework of the Solidarity Mechanism.
Nevertheless, she reiterated that the country will not accept new migrants or assume the costs of hosting them. "We will not accept new migrants and we will not pay for them," she insisted, while assuring that Latvia will continue to provide support and assistance to other countries.
During her speech, Braže also addressed the situation of the Latvian diaspora. She recalled that more than one fifth of the country's citizens live abroad temporarily or permanently, taking advantage of mobility opportunities to work or study. However, she stressed that the Government wishes to encourage the return of its nationals.
"We want our people to return," she stated, explaining that the authorities work both from the embassies and within the country to maintain contact with citizens abroad, facilitate their return, and make use of their knowledge and experience for the benefit of Latvia.

In another part of her address, the minister referred to the preparations for Latvia's Presidency of the Council of the European Union in the second half of 2028. She indicated that work has already begun and proposed promoting a program to translate works by Latvian authors into English as part of the commemorative activities.
Braže recalled that a similar initiative was carried out in 2018, within the framework of the national centenary "Latvia 100," when numerous books by Latvian writers were translated. In her view, this type of program should be resumed in order to strengthen the country's cultural projection at the European and international level.
