Matías Almeyda proposed creating a Champions of America that unites Conmebol and Concacaf

Matías Almeyda surprised with a proposal that could change the landscape of international competitions on the continent. In the lead-up to the Monterrey match against Nashville for the Leagues Cup, the Argentine coach questioned the current format of the tournament that brings together teams from Liga MX and MLS and suggested creating an "American Champions" with participation from clubs across the Americas.

The coach's initiative aims to integrate the main institutions of Conmebol and Concacaf into a continental competition capable of raising the footballing level of the different leagues.

“I know the distances are long, but if the Champions is played, why not have a championship that is played all over America, this way it will enhance everyone and not just certain sectors,” Almeyda stated.

Almeyda recalled Mexico's participation in the Copa Libertadores

To support his idea, the Monterrey coach remembered the impact that the presence of Mexican clubs had in competitions organized by Conmebol.

“When the Mexican league competed in the Copa Libertadores and all that, it was beneficial. The Copa América also, I believe, made it very competitive and helped it grow,” he pointed out.

Almeyda considered that greater integration between the different regions of the continent could benefit both clubs and the football market.

“As long as it is beneficial, it is good; all of America is needed because players are being bought and sold,” he added.

The Argentine even suggested that the recent Club World Cup could serve as a precedent to move towards a continental competition of these characteristics.

“It's a good time to propose it; they already tried with that Club World Cup. We can do something like the Champions, between North America, Central America, and South America and see who is better,” he affirmed.
