Matías Almeyda surprised with a proposal that could change the landscape of international competitions on the continent. In the lead-up to the Monterrey match against Nashville for the Leagues Cup, the Argentine coach questioned the current format of the tournament that brings together teams from Liga MX and MLS and suggested creating an "American Champions" with participation from clubs across the Americas.
The coach's initiative aims to integrate the main institutions of Conmebol and Concacaf into a continental competition capable of raising the footballing level of the different leagues.
“I know the distances are long, but if the Champions is played, why not have a championship that is played all over America, this way it will enhance everyone and not just certain sectors,” Almeyda stated.
