A mother will be tried for attempting to burn her four-month-old daughter alive in Spain

The Prosecutor's Office is requesting 25 years in prison for aggravated attempted murder due to kinship

The Third Section of the Provincial Court of Valencia will try a woman this Tuesday who is accused of attempting to murder her daughter, who was only four months old.

The events, according to the Public Prosecutor's Office, occurred on January 8, 2022 at a residence in the Valencian region of l’Horta Nord, when the accused locked herself in a room with the infant and started a fire that endangered the baby's life.

According to the account of the Public Prosecutor's Office, the woman set fire to a blanket that she placed under the crib, while also igniting a stuffed animal that she placed next to the child. The toy began to drip flammable material, which increased the risk of the fire spreading.

The situation was interrupted by the defendant's brother, who managed to enter the bedroom and, after struggling with her, rescued the infant. The girl suffered a first-degree burn on her left hand, but avoided more serious injuries thanks to the timely intervention.

The Public Prosecutor's Office is requesting a sentence of 25 years in prison for the accused for the crime of attempted murder, with the aggravating circumstance of kinship and the mitigating circumstance of intoxication. Sources from the Superior Court of Justice of the Valencian Community confirmed that the trial will be held this week and that the version of events presented by the Public Prosecutor's Office is based on expert evidence and testimonies gathered during the investigation of the case.

This extreme case, which will be debated in the judicial sphere, reinforces the argument that child protection can't depend solely on individual or family reactions, but rather on clear, effective public policies that are removed from merely welfare-based or ideological approaches.
