Nacho Torres seeks to eliminate immunity for officials and union leaders in Chubut
The amendment must be ratified by the citizens in a referendum that will take place in October.
The province of Chubut became a pioneer in the elimination of immunity privileges for public officials and union leaders.
The measure, promoted by Governor Ignacio Torres, was approved by the Legislature and must be ratified in an open plebiscite during the midterm elections.

A historic change in provincial politics
The initiative proposes a constitutional amendment that eliminates the privileges of all branches of the State and union representatives, preventing them from using this protection against possible legal cases. With this reform, Chubut positions itself as the first Argentine province to eliminate these privileges.
Through his social media, Torres celebrated the approval of the measure and stated that it represents the end of “a long-standing debt with the citizens.”

“We not only made the decision to propose a constitutional amendment to be the first province in Argentina without privileges, but we also extended the Clean Record to all levels of the State with a clear objective: not to allow thieves and corrupt individuals to entrench themselves in politics,” expressed the governor.
He also pointed out that the privileges for officials and union leaders “have no reason to exist” and that those who oppose the measure seek to hinder the province's progress.
The final decision will be up to the people of Chubut

Vice Governor Gustavo Menna, one of the main promoters of the project, highlighted that the approval by the Legislature represents progress in transparency and equity before the law.
“The step taken by the Legislature ensures that no one has an advantage before the law and, above all, that judges' decisions are not subject to political approval,” stated Menna.
The amendment must be ratified by the citizens in a referendum to be held in October. Menna expressed confidence that the measure will have broad popular support, as it represents a strong commitment from the people of Chubut in the fight against political and union privileges.
