A New Candidate to Manage Vélez: Guillermo Barros Schelotto

The twin received a call from the management to fill the vacancy left by Domínguez.

Vélez contacted Guillermo Barros Schelotto to take over as head coach following Sebastián Domínguez's departure due to poor results. The "Mellizo" is in Argentina for family reasons and has shown interest in the proposal from the Liniers club.

Barros Schelotto, with a distinguished career as a coach in teams like Lanús, Boca Juniors, and Paraguay, among others, has expressed his willingness to return to Argentine soccer, and Vélez could be his new destination. However, his decision will depend on the solidity and ambition of the project presented by the club, beyond economic matters.

Beyond this issue, the Fortín has already had informal talks with the former footballer and scheduled an in-person meeting at his home for this Tuesday afternoon. If negotiations progress, the economic aspect would remain to be solved, a delicate issue for the Liniers club due to the failed sale of Valentín Gómez to the Foster Gillett Group.

Meanwhile, as the new head coach is being decided, Vélez's management has appointed Marcelo Bravo as interim coach. His presence in the next match against San Martín de San Juan, scheduled for Friday at the Amalfitani stadium, is not yet confirmed, adding uncertainty to the club's sports outlook.

The Mellizo's career:

Guillermo retired from national soccer in 2011 when he was playing for Gimnasia y Esgrima de La Plata, and just a year later, he would become Lanús's head coach. With the "Granate" team, he would win the 2013 Copa Sudamericana and remain there until early 2016, when he was signed by Palermo in Italy, where he would only manage 2 matches.

After a very brief stint with the "Rosanero," he received a call from Boca, which was looking for a coach following Vasco Arruabarrena's departure, and he took over in February of that year. Although many Boca fans have a bitter memory of his tenure, especially due to the Libertadores final lost in Madrid against their classic rival River, his overall performance was good, winning two consecutive championships in 2017 and 2018 with the club.

In early 2019, he was introduced as the coach of Los Angeles Galaxy, where he would pass without much success until his departure at the end of 2020. Finally, his last job was with the Paraguay National Team, where he was between 2021 and 2023, as he was dismissed after several adverse results. If he joins Vélez, the "Mellizo" would return to coaching after almost 1 and a half years of inactivity.
