The last day of the English transfer market once again had Enzo Fernández at the center of attention. Just four years after making the leap to European football, the midfielder of the Argentine National Team starred in another multimillion-dollar transfer: he left Chelsea and became the new player of Manchester City.
According to specialized journalist Fabrizio Romano, the deal was closed for an amount close to 145 million euros. The 25-year-old midfielder will sign a six-season contract, until 2032, and will join a team looking to strengthen its midfield after the departure of key players like Rodri and Tijjani Reijnders, and that considers him a high-profile addition for Enzo Maresca's project.
Fernández had been waiting for a decision about his future. In fact, while the clubs were advancing in negotiations, he was not called up by Xabi Alonso for the last commitments of the Blues, against Luton Town in the Carabao Cup and Brighton in the Premier League.
The magnitude of the operation places the former River player among the most important transfers in history. The 145 million euros make his arrival at City the fourth most expensive transfer of all time alongside Alexander Isak's transfer to Liverpool.
Beyond the global ranking, Fernández has once again broken his own record. In January 2023, Chelsea paid 121 million euros to Benfica to secure his services, an amount that at that time made the Argentine the most expensive player in Premier League history, something he has now repeated, although tied with Isak.
It is worth noting that his third transfer in European football also represents a new income for River, the club where he was trained. According to various estimates released about the FIFA solidarity mechanism, the Núñez institution will receive a percentage of the operation, with an amount that would range, depending on the final figures, around 5 million euros.
