Authorities evict a property in Palermo occupied by a cooperative associated with Juan Grabois

The space, located behind the Mercado de Bonpland, had been occupied for over two decades

The Buenos Aires City Government evicted a property located behind the Bonpland Market 1660 in the Palermo neighborhood on Thursday morning.

This property had been occupied for more than 20 years by the La Dignidad cooperative, linked to social leader Juan Grabois.

The operation was carried out jointly by the City Police and the Ministries of Public Space and Human Development. During the operation, an employee of the site was arrested who had a prior arrest warrant for gender-based violence.

The property had originally been assigned in 2001 through a precarious use permit for the operation of a community kitchen. However, over time the space began to be used for other unauthorized activities, such as renting for events and parties, which led to repeated complaints from neighbors and closures.

In 2022, authorities detected the signing of a loan-for-use contract between sub-organizations of Grabois's group, without legal authorization or approval from the Buenos Aires City Government.

On the premises there were  a grocery store, a greengrocer, craft stalls, and a cultural center where talks and political events were held.

According to the Buenos Aires City Security Secretary, Maximiliano Hernán Piñeiro, "there was no community kitchen operating, parties were held, there were flags of social organizations, from here they would go out to organize pickets or marches.  This group used as their own a space belonging to the City Government that is not for social, picketer, or political meetings".

Several riot police officers with shields and protective gear are lined up at the entrance of a building at night, while a black and white mural can be seen on the wall.

The City also reported that it stopped funding the transportation by bus from the suburbs of waste pickers belonging to cooperatives linked to Juan Grabois.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Economic Development will determine the new use of the property, with the aim of returning it to activities that comply with current regulations and benefit residents.

Ultimately, the eviction of the property occupied behind the Bonpland Market shows how for more than two decades Kirchnerism, through social organizations such as Juan Grabois's La Dignidad cooperative, used public resources for partisan and political indoctrination purposes.

This case adds to a long list of public properties that were occupied and irregularly managed by groups close to Kirchnerism, consolidating territorial power structures outside the law.
