In a demonstration of democratic strength, Paraguay celebrates this Sunday its internal simultaneous elections, a decisive step towards the municipal elections on October 4. A total of 4,661,000 citizens are eligible to choose the candidates who will manage the districts during the 2026-2031 period. The day, which began at 07:00, mobilizes 54 political groups, including 32 parties and 22 movements, operating under the modernity of electronic voting machines and the unlocked list system.
The absolute protagonism falls on the National Republican Association (ANR), the glorious Colorado Party, which once again proves to be the backbone of the nation with 2,804,546 supporters called to vote at 8,018 polling stations distributed across 481 voting centers. The president of the Republic, Santiago Peña, considered the political heir of Horacio Cartes, has already exercised his right to vote, reaffirming the government's commitment to institutional strengthening.

The epicenter of this electoral battle is Asunción, a city preparing for significant international challenges, such as hosting a World Cup game in 2030 and celebrating its 500th anniversary of foundation in 2037. To lead this transformation, the figure of Camilo Pérez emerges, the government's candidate from the Honor Colorado movement.
Pérez, a businessman with national and international experience, has transferred his proven management skills from the Paraguayan Olympic Committee to the political arena. His leadership has been key in consolidating the country as the host of the World Rally, projecting an image of Paraguay as a growing country brand to the world. With a lead of over ten points in various polls, Camilo Pérez represents the certainty and renewal that the Asuncion electorate demands after years of neglect.
His government proposal, designed to restore order and hope, is based on three critical axes: “potholes, garbage, and security”. Additionally, he has promised a 100-day contingency plan to recover public services and immediately pave the capital. According to sources, “Camilo Pérez represents a significant difference”, combining willingness, credibility, and management capacity.
On the opposite side is Senator Arnaldo Samaniego, who from the dissident Colorado faction attempts to return to a position he held between 2010 and 2015, a term remembered for its highs and lows. Samaniego has focused his discourse on criticism, mentioning an “irresponsible” debt of over 78 million dollars and the lack of storm drains in the city. However, the public seems to lean towards the forward-looking vision offered by the government.
Elections in Paraguay
The winner of this Republican internal election will face former minister Soledad Núñez in October, who has already secured her candidacy after an opposition poll in February. Therefore, party unity under the Honor Colorado model is essential to ensure that Asunción has a modern, prepared, and strategically visionary administration.
To ensure the purity of the process, the Superior Electoral Justice Tribunal (TSJE) has deployed over 15,000 voting machines throughout the territory, with a strong security operation that includes more than 3,500 agents from the National Police solely in Asunción. It is noteworthy that, on this occasion, there is no alcohol ban, allowing the day to proceed with normal commercial activity.
Results from the Preliminary Electoral Results Transmission System (TREP) are expected to start flowing at 16:46, offering a definitive trend around 20:00. The Colorado Party is thus heading towards a victory that will not only define candidates but will also mark the course of a modern, orderly, and future-oriented Asunción under the guidance of the government of Santiago Peña
