The dispute between Petroquímica Río Tercero and the chemical union escalated after the breakdown of the negotiation table held this Tuesday afternoon. The conflict, which began in October 2024, intensified with successive layoffs that left more than two hundred workers out of the plant. Since July, production activity has remained paralyzed, generating concern in the sector and the local community.

The situation worsened with a criminal complaint filed by the company, which blamed the union for alleged acts of violence during the occupation. The company claims there was material damage and retention of personnel, although the union rejects those accusations and keeps that the action is peaceful. The conflicting accounts make it difficult for both parties to reach an agreement and prolong the stalemate.

For the union, the main demand is the reinstatement of dismissed workers without salary reduction, in addition to the payment of outstanding severance. Meanwhile, the company argues that the plant is oversized and that without production it can't take on further commitments. Both parties admit they will try to resume talks, although no date has been confirmed.

Timeline of the conflict

In October 2024, the TDI plant was closed, which caused more than 70% of the revenue, and 125 employees were dismissed. On July 14, 2025, 124 more layoffs were added, including operators, supervisors, and administrative staff, even some based in Buenos Aires. On July 9, the company decided to halt all plants in Río Tercero, while the union denounced asset stripping.

On July 23, the company filed for creditor protection in the Buenos Aires courts. In August, the mandatory conciliation ordered by the provincial Labor Secretariat expired, with no effective results. The dismissals became final and since then there has been no resumption of production.

That same month, the union occupied the plant and clarified that the action would remain peaceful. In September, a round of dialogue was opened, with the possibility of reinstating some dismissed workers. On September 9, the negotiation table broke down and the company filed a criminal complaint, while the union continued the occupation.
