In the early hours of Wednesday, Poland activated its air defense and deployed its own and allied aircraft in response to a Russian airstrike against Ukraine's western regions, near the Polish border.

The operation was carried out after the Ukrainian Air Force alerted about the possible incursion of Russian drones into Polish airspace, a NATO member country. In response, both aircraft belonging to the Polish Air Force and those from Italy, the Netherlands, and the United States collaborated in deterring the drones.

Through a statement on the social network X, the Operational Command of the Polish Armed Forces reported that both ground-based air defense and radar systems were placed at the highest level of alert.

''Polish and allied aircraft are operating in our airspace, while air defense and radar reconnaissance systems have been raised to the highest state of readiness,'' the message stated.

Previously, the Ukrainian Air Force had posted on the Telegram app that several Russian drones were heading westward in the country and posed a direct threat to the Polish city of Zamosc, near the border with Ukraine. However, that post was later deleted, which caused some confusion regarding the accuracy or veracity of the information.

At midnight, much of Ukrainian territory, including border regions with Poland such as Volyn and Lviv, remained under air raid alerts. According to Ukrainian media, several Russian drones may have briefly crossed into Polish airspace, although so far there is no official confirmation from Polish authorities.

Some Ukrainian press reports mentioned that at least one drone was flying toward the city of Rzeszów, located in southeastern Poland, a strategic area due to its proximity to the Ukrainian border and for hosting key infrastructure for military and humanitarian logistics to Ukraine.

The fact that Russian drones may have entered the airspace of a NATO member country represents a serious concern for regional security, especially in a context where tensions between Russia and the West continue to rise.

Although no damage or casualties have been reported on Polish territory, the situation underscores the high risk of escalation facing Eastern Europe, where miscalculations or accidents could trigger a broader response from the Atlantic alliance.

It is worth noting that this would not be the first time similar incidents have been reported. On previous occasions, missile and drone debris have accidentally fallen in countries neighboring Ukraine, including Poland, prompting immediate diplomatic responses and security assessments.

For now, Polish armed forces continue to monitor their airspace and keep their defense systems active, while greater clarity is expected regarding what happened during the night. The situation is still developing, and authorities in Poland and its NATO allies will remain alert to any new threat arising from the conflict in Ukraine.
