The regime of Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo launched harsh unfounded criticisms against the re-elected president of Ecuador, Daniel Noboa, whom they accused of leading a "servile dictatorship." The reaction of the Nicaraguan Government contrasts with the broad international support received by the Ecuadorian electoral process.
Noboa was re-elected on April 13 with 55.6% of the votes, surpassing the correísta candidate Luisa González. The legitimacy of his victory was endorsed by observation missions from the European Union and the Organization of American States, which ruled out any indication of fraud.
In a statement titled "The Non-Victory of the Deceivers," the Sandinista regime disqualified the results without presenting evidence. The complaint was accompanied by insults and baseless accusations, ignoring that their own re-election in 2021 was considered illegitimate by nearly 40 countries.
The criticism from the Ortega-Murillo regime came after Nicaragua broke diplomatic relations with Ecuador in April 2024. The conflict originated after the arrest of former Vice President Jorge Glas at the Mexican embassy, a decision supported by the Ecuadorian justice system.
