A retired Buenos Aires police officer seriously injured a 17-year-old motorcycle thief who attempted to rob a young woman in downtown Hurlingham. The criminal, who has a criminal record and has already been identified by the justice system, remains hospitalized in intensive care at Hospital Posadas. His accomplice is still at large.
The incident occurred at the intersection of Bustamante and Mascagni, when a young woman was waiting to cross at the traffic light. Two individuals on a motorcycle lunged at her with the intention of stealing her belongings. At that moment, a 53-year-old retired lieutenant, who was passing through the area, noticed the maneuver and decided to intervene to prevent the attack. Policia bonaerense.
When the former police officer gave the order to stop, the criminals immediately replied with gunfire. Faced with this direct aggression, the officer — who has a legal permit for his service weapon — drew his pistol and opened fire. The assailants fled without completing the robbery, but during the escape one of them dropped a Beretta pistol with which he had fired at the officer.
After the shootout, the police officer called 911 and provided officers with a precise description of the assailant: white and black jacket and dark pants. Gendarmerie personnel arrived to carry out the corresponding forensic work.
About an hour later, while security forces were still working at the scene, a 17-year-old young man arrived injured at Hospital Posadas wearing the same clothing described by the officer. He had been shot in the neck and abdomen. He underwent emergency surgery and was admitted in serious condition. Cameras in the area confirmed that he was the same motorcycle thief who attacked the young woman.
Judicial sources specified that the minor has a record of various crimes committed even before reaching the age of criminal responsibility. Prosecutor Guillermo Rodríguez Rey, from the Juvenile Criminal Responsibility Prosecutor's Office No. 1 of Morón, ordered his arrest and placed a police guard at the medical center. He faces charges of aggravated robbery with the use of a firearm in the attempted degree and illegal possession. Polilicia Bonaerense.
Regarding the actions of the retired police officer, the prosecutor did not take any measures against him and considered that he acted in legitimate defense. The investigation remains open and the search for the accomplice continues.
The case is similar to another recent incident in González Catán, where a Federal Police officer shot and killed an armed robber who tried to assault him while he was on his way to work. In both cases, the justice system determined that the officers acted to defend their lives against armed assailants.
