Riot Games brings a detrimental change for League of Legends players

Riot Games already had clear restrictions on the use of external software in League of Legends

Starting March 13, 2025, Riot Games will block third-party applications that report the cooldown of enemy ultimate abilities.

This measure aims to maintain fairness in the game and prevent unfair advantages for those who use these types of tools.

End to enemy ultimate alerts

In a message posted on the official Riot Games Developer Relations account, the company announced that it will update its policy to prohibit enemy ultimate alerts in external applications. Platforms that do not remove this feature before the established date risk losing access to the Riot API.

This type of software has become popular among League of Legends players, as it allows optimizing builds, selecting champions to counter opponents, and prioritizing abilities in the match. However, the possibility of receiving alerts about enemy ultimate cooldowns has sparked a debate on whether this constitutes an unfair advantage.

Riot's stance on third-party apps

Riot Games already had clear restrictions on the use of external software in League of Legends. The company prohibits tools that:

  • Alter the game's objective, such as modifying damage or automatically destroying the enemy Nexus.
  • Offer unfair advantages over players who do not use these applications.
  • Reduce the diversity of builds and strategies, affecting the gaming experience.

The decision to block these specific alerts aligns with Riot's philosophy of ensuring fair and balanced matches.

Community debate

The measure has caused controversy among players, especially in forums like the League of Legends subreddit. While some support Riot's decision, others argue that removing them will mainly affect less experienced players, who rely on these aids to improve their performance in the game.

Additionally, the discussion expanded to other areas of balance, such as the fact that junglers do not receive similar alerts about the respawn time of small camps, a crucial aspect for this role.

With this change, Riot Games reaffirms its commitment to  fairness in League of Legends, although it remains to be seen how the debate will evolve in the coming months.
