Security Changes for Nicolás Fonseca After His Kidnapping in Mexico

His father, Daniel Fonseca, provided details about the dramatic situation experienced by León de México's player.

The Uruguayan footballer and former River player Nicolás Fonseca, currently a midfielder for Club León in Mexico, suffered a violent incident on February 27 when he was assaulted and kidnapped while heading to his team's training on the León-Lagos highway in Jalisco. During the incident, he was stripped of his BMW truck and held by the criminals before being released in a deserted area.

After this traumatic episode, strict security measures were implemented to protect the player. According to statements from his father, Daniel Fonseca, Nicolás now has permanent protection from armed police officers 24 hours a day. "Since that day, he has been with two armed police officers 24 hours a day, along with his girlfriend and his cook, Martín Silva, who lives with them. As soon as they leave the complex, they are joined. While that gives us some peace of mind, it's totally uncomfortable because freedom is lost," commented the former footballer.

According to his father, this situation has affected his personal freedom, creating discomfort in his daily life, however, he highlighted the support of his teammates, especially James Rodríguez: "James called him immediately, went to see him, and made himself available. He said: 'Stay calm, kid.' With his experience, he used the right words for Nicolás to find some peace. Beyond the sports aspect, there is a very united group in the club. That is essential."

Despite the seriousness of the incident, Club León has not requested additional support from the Municipal Police nor has it reinforced security beyond the usual protocol established by Liga MX, which includes the transportation and accompaniment of teams during matches.
