Forward Jesús de Miguel, 30 years old, suffered a cardiorespiratory arrest after colliding with Jesús Owono, goalkeeper of FC Andorra. Despite being resuscitated and remaining hospitalized in intensive care, he passed away on Tuesday morning
According to Spanish press reports, Owono was deeply affected by what happened and intends to personally reach out to the family or close friends of the player when they feel it is the right time.
The incident also had repercussions in the sporting world. The Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) decided to suspend the matches of the Copa del Rey (CD Anaitasuna - Alavés; CD Panplona - Eibar) and Copa de la Reina (Celta de Vigo - Espanyol), as well as a friendly match of the U-21 National Team against Japan, scheduled for this Tuesday.
The play that ended in tragedy
The episode that triggered the tragedy occurred during the match between Tenerife and Andorra, when the final minutes were being played. De Miguel attempted to control a long ball in the central area of the field, but Owono came out of his area to clear it and ended up colliding with his knee against the chest of the attacker.
The forward fell unconscious on the grass and quickly players from both teams called for medical assistance. Medical personnel worked for several minutes to stabilize him and managed to revive him after he suffered a cardiac arrest. He was subsequently transported by ambulance to the hospital, where he was admitted to intensive care.
Given the seriousness of the situation, referee Pérez Hernández sent off the Equatoguinean goalkeeper and suspended the match when seven minutes of stoppage time were being played. The scene generated a profound silence in the Heliodoro Rodríguez López stadium as De Miguel was removed from the field in a medical vehicle.
During the first hours of hospitalization, Tenerife had reported that the footballer remained "stable, within serious condition". However, on Tuesday morning, the institution communicated a neurological deterioration that foreshadowed the fatal outcome.
