Starlink will offer free cell phone connection starting July 2025

Apple, Samsung, Motorola, and Google devices will be able to connect to the network at no cost in areas without mobile coverage.

Starting in July 2025, new cell phones will be able to connect for free to the Starlink satellite network, the internet service developed by SpaceX, Elon Musk's aerospace company.

This advancement will allow Apple, Samsung, Motorola, and Google models to access satellite connectivity in areas where traditional mobile networks are unavailable, offering an alternative for communication in remote or hard-to-reach places.

What is Starlink and what will its free connection include

Starlink is a network composed of thousands of low-orbit satellites, designed to bring high-speed internet to rural areas and regions without telecommunications infrastructure.

From July 2025, the service will expand to allow mobile phone connections in areas without coverage, enabling features such as:

  • Sending and receiving text messages
  • Sharing real-time location
  • Contacting emergency services

In future stages, the network is also expected to allow voice calls and access to mobile internet, which will significantly improve connectivity in hard-to-reach areas.

Compatible cell phone brands and models

Connectivity with Starlink will depend on the hardware and software compatibility of each phone. So far, manufacturers that have confirmed compatibility include:

  • Apple: iPhone 14 and later models, including Pro and Pro Max versions.
  • Google: Pixel 9 and its Pro, Pro Fold, and Pro XL variants.
  • Motorola: Models released from 2024 onwards.
  • Samsung:
    • Galaxy A Series: A14, A15, A16, A35, A53, and A54.
    • Galaxy S Series: S21 and onwards, including Plus, Ultra, and Fan Edition versions.
    • Foldable models: Galaxy Z Flip3, Z Fold3, and higher versions.

To access the satellite network, devices must have the latest software version available for each model. This will ensure an automatic and stable connection when the user is out of reach of conventional mobile networks.

How device connection with Starlink will work

The connection process to Starlink  will be automatic. When a user is out of reach of mobile networks, their compatible phone will link directly with the satellites without the need for manual intervention.

Upon establishing the connection, the phone will display the message "T-Mobile SpaceX", confirming access to the satellite network.

  • Available features in the first phase:
    • Text messaging
    • Real-time location
    • Emergency calls to 911
  • Upcoming features: In a second phase, the service will include voice calls and internet browsing, improving communication in areas without telecommunications infrastructure.

Global availability and expansion

Currently, Starlink offers satellite connectivity in a trial phase in the United States, Chile, and Peru. This initial stage will allow the system's performance to be evaluated before its worldwide deployment.

The trial phase will serve to adjust the technology and optimize the connection before its global expansion.

Starlink satellites operate at an altitude of 550 kilometers, allowing them to offer lower latency and higher speed compared to traditional satellites, which orbit at 35,000 kilometers.

With this advancement, SpaceX aims to revolutionize mobile connectivity, eliminating access barriers in remote areas and improving communication in emergency situations.
