The Government of Syria announced on Tuesday a ceasefire with the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), led by the Kurds, after a lightning offensive with which Damascus regained large areas of the northeast of the country.
As part of the agreement, the SDF have a period of four days to present a plan for integration into the central state, a proposal backed by the United States, which until now had been their main international ally in Syria.
The announcement represents the biggest change in territorial control since the fall of Bashar al-Assad 13 months ago. The rapid recovery of territory by the Syrian Army, together with the withdrawal of U.S. support, alters the political and military balance in a strategic region bordering Türkiye and Iraq.

The U.S. envoy for Syria, Tom Barrack, described the integration offer as "the greatest opportunity" for the Kurds, which would include citizenship, cultural protection, and political participation within the Syrian state.
Barrack stated that the original objective of the SDF, to fight the Islamic State with U.S. support, "has been largely surpassed" and he assured that Washington has no long-term interest in maintaining troops in Syria.
President Donald Trumpbacked Syrian leader Ahmed al-Sharaa, highlighting his efforts to stabilize the northeast and oversee the prisons where thousands of Islamic State fighters remain detained. Trump stated that the United States is still "trying to protect the Kurds", although he acknowledged that the relationship with them has changed since he took office.
The White House, however, expressed its "grave concern" about the situation and urged all parties to negotiate "in good faith", exercise restraint, and protect civilians, especially ethnic and religious minorities.

The SDF confirmed their acceptance of the ceasefire and assured that they will not undertake military actions except in self-defense. Damascus also requested that the SDF propose a candidate for the post of deputy defense minister as part of the integration process.
The ceasefire entered into force immediately, and the Government assured that it will not attempt to enter the Kurdish cities of Hasakah and Qamishli during the four days granted for negotiations.
Northeastern Syria, historically an Islamic State stronghold before being liberated by the SDF with support from the U.S.-led coalition, remains a sensitive area.

The Kurdish militia YPG, the main component of the SDF, generates tensions with Türkiye, which considers it linked to the PKK. Since Assad's fall, the country has been governed by al-Sharaa, a former rebel leader and close ally of Ankara.
The situation is further complicated by the presence of prisons and camps holding thousands of Islamic State detainees. On Monday, between 120 and 200 prisoners escaped from Shaddadi after the SDF withdrawal, although most were recaptured by government forces. It was also confirmed that the SDF left the al-Hol camp, where Damascus is preparing the deployment of its troops.
