They hacked the president of Paraguay to promote a crypto scam

From Santiago Peña's account, it was falsely announced that Paraguay was adopting Bitcoin as legal tender

The Government of Paraguay confirmed on Monday that President Santiago Peña's official account on the social network X was the victim of a hack. According to an official statement from the Office of the President, irregular activity was detected, suggesting unauthorized access by third parties.

The incident occurred after a message was published from the president's account, falsely announcing that Paraguay was adopting Bitcoin as legal tender. In the same message, supposed "bonds" in cryptocurrencies were offered to interested citizens, with instructions to contact an alleged national treasury. All the content turned out to be part of an elaborate crypto scam.

"We inform you that the official account of the President of the Republic on the social network X has shown irregular activity suggesting possible unauthorized access. The CERTPY team is already working together with the X platform to clarify the situation," states the new statement published through official channels.

Authorities asked citizens to disregard any recent posts from that account until an official confirmation is issued. In addition, they also committed to keeping the public informed through verified institutional media.

The alleged announcement of Bitcoin legalization caused confusion and concern, both in Paraguay and abroad, given the potential impact that such a decision could have on the national economy. However, doubts about the authenticity of the message quickly began to arise, due to the unusual tone and the inclusion of instructions to participate in what appeared to be a fraudulent investment offer.

This type of attack on verified accounts of public figures is an increasingly common technique among scammers seeking to lend credibility to cryptocurrency fraud schemes. The impersonation of authorities or celebrities usually aims to attract funds from unsuspecting citizens or redirect them to fake platforms.

Meanwhile, the Cyber Incident Response Center of Paraguay (CERTPY) confirmed that a technical investigation has already begun to determine the origin of the attack, regain full control of the account, and prevent similar future incidents.
