The United States Congress announced the launch of an investigation into clear ideological bias in artificial intelligence
The United States House of Representatives Committee on Oversight and Government Reform has launched a formal investigation accusing Wikipedia of ideological bias and information manipulation.
The concerns revolve around a pro-Kremlin, anti-Western, and anti-Israeli bias present in the content of the digital encyclopedia, which is especially relevant given its extensive use as a source in artificial intelligence models such as ChatGPT, Google AI, and Perplexity.
In this regard, a June report revealed that Wikipedia accounts for 47.9% of the main citations used by ChatGPT in its responses, establishing it as the primary information source for AI systems. The study was based on the analysis of 30 million citations between August 2024 and June 2025.
La Comisión de Supervisión y Revisión del Gobierno del Congreso envió una carta la directora de la Fundación Wikimedia
Wikipedia's biases.
In a letter addressed to Maryana Iskander, Chief Executive Officer of the Wikimedia Foundation, the congressional committee expressed its alarm over multiple reports pointing to systematic attempts to manipulate Wikipedia content aimed at Western audiences.
One of these documents denounced the promotion of antisemitic and anti-Israeli messages by editors sympathetic to the terrorist group Hamas, who are allegedly removing relevant information about the group and biasing articles about the Jewish state.
Another report, titled "Exposing Pravda: How pro-Kremlin forces are poisoning AI models and rewriting Wikipedia," published in April 2025, documents an organized disinformation campaign in favor of the Kremlin, aimed at distorting the narrative about Russia and its geopolitical conflicts.
El fundador de Wikipedia elogió la labor del Congreso en la investigación lanzada
Wikipedia's co-founder welcomes the investigation.
Wikipedia's co-founder, Larry Sanger, welcomed the launch of this investigation, stating that there is misuse of public and foreign funds to finance biased edits on the platform.
The key figure in the history of the digital encyclopedia strongly criticized the Wikimedia Foundation for not intervening in key editorial decisions, and also for keeping the identity of the most influential editors secret. Sanger says the foundation allows a small group of activists to impose editorial decisions that affect the site's global content.
Sanger also questioned Wikipedia's system for selecting reliable sources, since it centrally defines which media outlets are acceptable, which ultimately shapes global discourse on sensitive topics. He pointed out that this model is vulnerable to coordinated manipulation by state or ideological actors with specific agendas.
