Trump declared a national mourning for the assassination of Charlie Kirk

Conservative leader Charlie Kirk, founder of the youth organization Turning Point USA, was killed this Wednesday during a conference at Utah Valley University.

The leader was shot in the neck while giving a talk, which caused immediate shock in the U.S. political sphere.

Authorities confirmed that the alleged striker was subdued at the scene and is in custody, while the investigation continues to determine the motivations behind the incident, which could have political components.

 

President Donald Trump led the public reactions with a series of messages on his social network Truth Social, in which he acknowledged Kirk's career and declared an official national tribute.

At 4:02 p.m., shortly after it became known that the leader had been wounded, he wrote: “We must all pray for Charlie Kirk, who was shot. A great man from head to toe. God bless him!”.

Later, when the news of his death was confirmed, Trump published a second message in which he highlighted the young leader's role within conservatism: “The great, even legendary, Charlie Kirk has passed away. No one understood or had the Heart of Youth in the United States better than Charlie. He was loved and admired by everyone, especially by me, and now he is no longer with us. Melania and I express our deepest condolences to his beautiful wife Erika and to his family. Charlie, we love you!”.

At 6:02 p.m., the president added a third statement, in which he ordered a symbolic measure of federal scope: “In honor of Charlie Kirk, a true great American patriot, I order that all American flags across the United States fly at half-mast until Sunday afternoon at 6:00 p.m.”.

The gesture was interpreted as a sign of recognition of Kirk's figure and his role as a leader of conservative youth.

From Congress, expressions of support and solidarity also multiplied. Utah Senator Mike Lee stated: “Please join me in praying for Charlie Kirk and the students gathered there.” In the same vein, Vice President JD Vance spoke out on social media calling for unity and for supporting the leader's family at this time.

Kirk's assassination represents a major blow to the youth conservative movement in the United States. His work at Turning Point USA made him a key figure in spreading Republican values among new generations.

Trump's immediate reaction, along with the decision to declare national mourning, reflects the political and symbolic importance that the founder of the organization achieved in the last decade within U.S. conservatism.
