Less than two months after their crowning, the squad of the Spanish National Team world champion is already starting to experience its first farewells. 42 days after the final against the Argentinian National Team, Marcos Llorente decided to end his cycle with La Roja and surprised everyone by announcing his international retirement at just 31 years old.
The Atlético de Madrid player communicated his decision this Thursday, September 3, through an extensive message posted on Instagram. There he explained that it is a personal decision he had been contemplating for some time and that it was not influenced by his participation in the World Cup or the result obtained by La Roja.
"After a lot of time thinking it over, I have decided to close my chapter with the National Team", Llorente began. The player acknowledged that he could still have several years ahead with the national jersey, but emphasized that he chose to put an end to his journey.
"I know that many of you will not understand it, and surely, I would not have understood it from the outside either. But it is a personal decision, very well thought out and, above all, very heartfelt", stated the versatile footballer, who also made it clear that the decision had already been made before the major international event. "Regardless of whether I would have gone to the World Cup or not, or whether we would have won or not, this decision was already made", assured the Madrid native to clear any connection between his farewell and what happened during the competition.
