The United States has decided to permanently establish an MQ-9 Reaper drone unit at Kunsan Air Base, located just 400 kilometers (249 miles) from the coast of China. This deployment, announced by the U.S. Air Force, represents a significant shift in defense strategy in East Asia and consolidates the military presence in South Korea.
The reactivated squadron, called the 431st Expeditionary Reconnaissance Squadron, will operate from South Korea's west coast, strengthening Washington and Seoul's intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance capabilities in the Indo-Pacific theater.
MQ-9 Reaper Capabilities
The MQ-9 Reaper drones stand out for their versatility. With a range of more than 2,500 kilometers (1,553 miles) and the possibility of aerial refueling, they can remain in operation for extended periods. In addition, they are equipped to carry Hellfire missiles and laser-guided bombs, making them a platform capable of fulfilling both reconnaissance and combat missions.

Their operational radius includes not only North Korea and the demilitarized zone, but also Taiwan, the East China Sea, and even the Bohai Sea, where China frequently conducts military maneuvers.
