The communist mayor of New York City, Zohran Mamdani, signed an executive order this Friday to commemorate September 11 and then handed the symbolic pen to his advisor Ramzi Kassem, a lawyer known for defending an al-Qaeda terrorist linked to the Pentagon attack.
The action sparked outrage among survivors of the terrorist attack and families who lost a loved one on that fateful day. "It was something calculated. It happened during a ceremony meant to address the victims, and no one else. The 9/11 families did not go to City Hall to see Mamdani highlight someone whose work intersects with the same ideology that took their loved ones," retired detective Michael Alazar told the New York Post.
"It's bullshit," declared Dennis Warchola, whose brother Michael was a firefighter who died in the North Tower. "How can you defend a guy like that who wants to harm Americans or any innocent person?", he summarized.

Kassem represented the infamous al-Qaeda member Ahmed al-Darbi, who was sent to Guantanamo Bay after being convicted of terrorism in the 2002 attack on a French oil tanker in the Middle East as part of the terrorist organization's plan to disrupt global trade. His sister married Khalid al-Mihdhar, one of the hijackers of the flight that crashed into the Pentagon on that September 11.
Kassem is also known for providing free legal advice to Muslims like Mahmoud Khalil, the leader of the pro-Palestinian camp that was set up at Columbia University in 2024, who was arrested by Trump's ICE for lying on his green card application and is about to be deported.
"Ramzi Kassem said he was inspired by 9/11; not to join the fight against terrorism, but to defend the terrorists themselves. He doesn't even belong to this country, let alone our government", stated councilwoman Vicki Paladino.
