President Donald Trump announced that U.S. envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner will soon travel to Moscow and Kiev to present a new peace proposal aimed at ending the war between Russia and Ukraine, in an attempt to reactivate negotiations that have been stalled for months.

Trump confirmed the trips during a press conference in the Oval Office. When asked whether the U.S. representatives would bring new proposals for the parties, the president responded that both ''bring with them a proposal to end the war.'' Trump also highlighted the work of Witkoff and Kushner as negotiators and expressed optimism about the chances of reaching an agreement.

''We sent them to see if we can get something done,'' Trump stated, adding that there could be ''a good possibility'' of making progress. The White House did not provide additional details about the content of the proposal or the exact schedule of the meetings.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenski had already anticipated the meetings. In a post last Thursday, he noted that tentative dates for the talks had been set and explained that the U.S. envoys were expected to first meet with Russian officials in Moscow and later with Ukrainian representatives in Kiev.

Zelenski emphasized the importance of Washington remaining actively involved in diplomatic efforts. ''We are ready to meet with them in Ukraine,'' he wrote, insisting that the talks should be conducted in a serious and substantial manner.

This Friday, the Ukrainian president confirmed again that the visits were scheduled and specified that Witkoff and Kushner would first travel to Moscow before moving to Kiev on Sunday. Zelenski also announced measures aimed at ensuring the safety of the U.S. negotiators during their travels.

Ukraine committed to not conducting airstrikes while the U.S. envoys were traveling and assured that it would take measures to ensure that Russian airspace operated normally during their transit. Zelenski urged Moscow to adopt similar measures to avoid any incidents that could jeopardize the diplomatic mission.

The Ukrainian president stated that Kiev seeks to make the meetings ''as constructive and substantial as possible.'' He also noted that the goal is to identify concrete options to move towards the end of the conflict and that Ukraine will evaluate the proposals that Witkoff and Kushner bring to the table, as well as the response they receive from Russian authorities.

The new diplomatic initiative comes after several months of talks without significant progress. The trip to Moscow also occurs just weeks after an unexpected visit from CIA Director John Ratcliffe, who met with Russian officials on August 25. On that occasion, Trump confirmed the trip and stated that the United States was working intensively to end the conflict, while asserting that both Russia and Ukraine wanted to end the war.

Witkoff and Kushner also met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in January to discuss the conflict, which has now lasted over four years. However, subsequent negotiations stalled mainly due to territorial disagreements. Russia has demanded that Ukraine relinquish control of several regions, in addition to Crimea, a territory that Moscow annexed in 2014.

Russian demands include Donetsk, Kherson, Luhansk, and Zaporizhia, while Kiev has resisted accepting the cession of territories as a condition for a peace agreement.

Amid the new U.S. efforts, Putin stated on Thursday that there is ''a possibility'' of reaching a peace agreement with Ukraine. During the Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok, the Russian leader thanked those who are trying to contribute to a solution and asserted that, to end the conflict, Moscow and Kiev would first need to reach an understanding between themselves.
