The president Donald Trump dealt another economic blow to Canada this Monday amid the ongoing trade war with the leftist Prime Minister of the North, Mark Carney.
"The United States is working on a massive deal regarding the purchase of potash from Belarus", Trump revealed on his social media. "Prices would be substantially lower than what we currently pay Canada, very good news for our farmers and ranchers", added the Republican leader.
Canada rakes in about 5.2 billion dollars a year supplying the United States with around 80% of potash fertilizer imports, so losing this source of income would be a severe blow to Ottawa. In fact, after Trump announced the news this morning, the stock prices of Canadian fertilizer companies fell by 5%.
In contrast, Trump found cheap potash from Belarus, a country that has long been the target of U.S. sanctions, although these penalties were lifted after President Aleksandr Lukashenko released several political prisoners.
