The United States sanctioned a UN official for being antisemitic
This is Francesca Albanese, a United Nations official dedicated to the conflict in the Middle East
United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced the imposition of sanctions against Francesca Albanese, Special Rapporteur of the United Nations Human Rights Council for the Palestinian Territories.
The measure comes in response to Albanese's actions before the International Criminal Court (ICC) to investigate and prosecute U.S. and Israeli officials for alleged war crimes.
"Today I'm imposing sanctions against Francesca Paola Albanese under President Trump's Executive Order 14203, 'Imposing Sanctions on the International Criminal Court'," Rubio stated. "Albanese has maintained direct contact with the ICC to promote investigations, arrests, or criminal proceedings against citizens of the United States or Israel, without the consent of either country. Since neither the United States nor Israel is a party to the Rome Statute, this action represents a serious violation of both nations' sovereignty."
Rubio also questioned Albanese's record, accusing her of "biased and malicious activity" that, he said, has rendered her "unfit to serve in her position at the UN."
Rubio added: "She has openly spread antisemitism, expressed support for terrorism, and shown blatant contempt toward the United States, Israel, and the West. That bias has been evident throughout her career, including when she recommended that the ICC issue arrest warrants—without legitimate basis—against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant."
The Secretary of State asserted that Albanese has intensified her campaign recently, sending "threatening" letters to dozens of entities around the world, including major U.S. companies in the financial, technology, energy, defense, and hospitality sectors. In those letters, Albanese allegedly made "extreme and unfounded" accusations and requested that the ICC investigate and prosecute those companies and their executives.
"We're not going to tolerate these campaigns of political and economic warfare that endanger our national interests and our sovereignty," Rubio warned. "The United States will continue to take whatever measures it deems necessary to curb this kind of legal offensive ('lawfare'), to limit the excesses and abuses of power by the ICC, and to protect our sovereignty and that of our allies."
From Jerusalem, Israel's Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar welcomed Washington's decision and stated that it is "a clear message. It's about time the UN pays attention!"
