Nuevo León Congress Approved Reducing the Minimum Age for Public Office

The reform will allow 18-year-olds to become mayors and local deputies

Monterrey, March 1, 2025. The Congress of Nuevo León has approved in committees a constitutional reform that reduces the minimum age to hold public office in the state.

This measure will allow people from the age of 18 to aspire to positions such as mayors and local deputies, while the minimum age to be governor is reduced from 30 to 28 years.

Details of the constitutional reform

The Commission of Constitutional Points of the local Congress unanimously endorsed this initiative in the first round. The modifications affect articles 71, 118, and 172 of the Political Constitution of Nuevo León, adjusting the age requirements for the mentioned positions.

The PRI deputy Armida Serrato Flores, promoter of the initiative, explained that the objective is to eliminate age barriers that limit the political participation of young people.

Serrato argued that age should not be a factor of discrimination for those seeking candidacy, as this could be interpreted as a limitation on their right to political representation.

Reactions from the youth community

Representatives of the Youth Network for Mexico in Nuevo León expressed their support for the reform, emphasizing the importance of young aspirants having the proper preparation to perform the roles.

They pointed out that, although the reduction in age is a significant advance, it is essential to implement exams and filters within political parties to ensure the suitability of candidates.

Additionally, they highlighted the need for parties to offer training and education to young people interested in participating in politics, thus ensuring efficient and responsible public management.

Context and next steps

This reform will be discussed and possibly approved in the full Congress next Monday, March 3.

If ratified, Nuevo León will join other states that have adopted similar measures to promote the inclusion of young people in politics.

It is relevant to mention that, previously, in January 2024, members of civil organizations proposed increasing the minimum age to be governor to 35 years, arguing the need for more experience in the role.

However, the current reform reflects an opposite trend, seeking to open spaces for new generations.

With the approval of this reform, Nuevo León could have some of the youngest officials in the country, representing a significant change in the state's political dynamics.

Implications for the political future of Nuevo León

The inclusion of young people in public office could bring a renewal of ideas and approaches within the state government.

However, it also poses challenges regarding the experience and preparation of the new officials.

It will be essential for institutions and political parties to establish support and training mechanisms to ensure that young leaders are equipped to face the responsibilities of their positions.
